Need a fresh idea for a fun STEM destination? Birmingham is a great starting point! Rooted firmly in the 19th century steel industry and evolving into a city undergoing a renaissance, Birmingham has some really cool STEM attractions. Let’s explore some of the awesome things students can do on the ultimate STEM adventure to Birmingham!

Birmingham STEM Highlights

Sloss Birmingham

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark

The Sloss Blast Furnaces were a technological marvel when they opened in April 1882.  Today students can tour the site of this monument to the industrial revolution.

They’ll learn how the furnace worked, the historical significance of the plant in Birmingham’s growth and development, and what it was like to be a worker during production.

Pro Tip! Allow time for students to create their own piece of cast iron art!

Vulcan Park and Museum

The Vulcan Statue and Museum is another STEM stop. Created by Giuseppe Morettti, the Vulcan stands a whopping 56 feet tall and depicts the Roman god of fire and forge.

This cast iron statue is an iconic reminder of Birmingham’s steel and iron heritage. It also offers spectacular views of the city!

Take in multiple levels of hands-on STEM activities perfect for students of all ages!

Pro Tip! The McWane offers a wide variety of programs and resources to make learning exciting – be sure to plan ahead!

Barber Vintage MotorSports Museum

Opened in 1995 by retired race car driver George Barber, this unrivaled collection of restored-to-racing condition motorcycles is the world’s largest motorcycle collection (more than 1400!).

Pro Tip! Your museum admission gives you access the Barber Motorsports Park track to watch cars and motorcycles race. Look for the glass panels in the museum that allow you to see vehicles pass underneath

Southern Museum of Flight

The Southern Museum of Flight is a regional gem dedicated to sharing the history of aviation in the south. Exhibits include civilian, military and experimental aircraft and memorabilia. There are more than 100 aircraft on display to explore!

Pro Tip! Don’t miss the museum’s tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
