How To Perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
About the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Every summer, the historic streets of Edinburgh, Scotland, transform into a kaleidoscope of creativity! The Edinburgh Festival Fringe—the world’s largest performing arts festival—takes over with thousands of performances spanning theater, music, comedy, dance, and more. It’s a dream destination for artists of all ages. But did you know that college and university theater programs can be part of this global celebration?

Fun Festival History!
The Edinburgh International Festival debuted in 1947 as a premier, invite-only event focused on high-quality performances in music, theatre, opera, and dance. Eight theatre groups who expected to take part were excluded from the official program.
The uninvited companies decided to ignore the slight and perform anyway – on the “fringe” of the festival event!
About the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is now the world’s largest arts festival, transforming Scotland’s capital into a vibrant stage for thousands of performers every August.
The Fringe is an open-access festival where anyone can participate, resulting in a wide range of unpredictable performances in venues (and streets) across the city.
You’ll find practically every available space is commandeered for performances. The Royal Mile is a hot spot brimming with pop-up stages and street shows. In 2024, the festival featured more than 51,000 performances across 262 venues during its 25-day run!
Festival Fringe Dates
The Festival Fringe happens throughout the month of August – often with preview shows beginning at the end of July.

- Professional Development: Opportunities to attend workshops, network with industry professionals, and receive feedback.
- Cultural Immersion: Exposure to diverse artistic styles and global perspectives.
- Fringe Marketplace: Some university productions gain recognition through the Fringe Marketplace — a platform for professional-level shows seeking onward touring and development.
