Make Memories on a Spectacular Student Trip to Historic Boston
Teachers want a destination that’s educational. Students want a trip that is, well, FUN! Boston checks everyone’s boxes. This charming city is always evolving and always exciting! Rooted in history and overflowing with fun, your class will make memories on a spectacular student trip to historic Boston.
Historic Happenings
Freedom Trail/Faneuil Hall
Boston is the “Cradle of Liberty” (although Philadelphia may argue the point!). It’s a city that sparked a revolution and gave birth to our great nation. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile walk through 16 of the American Revolution’s most significant historical sites. Talk about authentic learning!
Follow the Freedom Trail to Faneuil Hall and stand where our forefathers delivered inspiring speeches. Browse the marketplace, explore the shops or sample traditional New England “chow-dah.”
USS Constitution Museum
The USS Constitution is out of dry dock and open for visitors after a two year meticulous conservation effort. Students learn about “Old Ironsides” and the War of 1812 through narratives and hands-on experiences. Self-guided or facilitated programs are also available. A knowledgeable education department works directly with your group to meet your curricular needs.
Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum
Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum offers an immersive dive into revolutionary history. Students join costumed interpreters aboard full-scale replica ships to reenact the iconic 1773 protest—yes, you can actually toss tea into the harbor!
Wet and Wild
Boston Harbor Cruises
Boston Harbor Cruises offers an incredible historical tour of the inner and outer harbors, highlighting tales of land and sea both past and present. Students also get a crash course in ecology, focusing on the cleanup of the harbor and learning about the nation’s oldest, continuously manned lighthouse. Very cool!
New England Aquarium
While your group is hanging around the harbor, they can stop by the New England Aquarium to check out a four-story Caribbean coral reef, the Amazon rainforest, or an adorable colony of penguins.
Follow your indoor adventures with an outdoor ride on a wicked fast catamaran. This sleek, high-speed vessel (seating up to 400) will quickly take you to the whale-watching action- an experience not to be missed!
Boston Duck Tours
Moving from water to land (and back to water!) is the famous Boston Duck Tours. Hop aboard an amphibious landing vehicle and travel through the streets of Boston right into the Charles River for the best and most unique views of the city.
A Few Must-Dos
Ghosts and Gravestones
Students love creepy and macabre. Poking around ancient cemeteries in the dark while listening to ghost stories is like hitting the teen jackpot! Paranormal, grisly and heinous history takes center stage during a Ghosts and Gravestones tour. Ghoulish guides will take you through Boston’s dark past.
Ancient Crypt at Old North Church
The Old North Church is a standard stop for student groups. However, what you may not realize is that there is an ancient crypt in the basement accessible only by special tour. The crypt was used from 1732-1860 and holds more than 1100 souls. Yikes!
Fenway Park
Fenway Park is a legendary slice of American sports history! Students can sit atop the iconic Green Monster, explore the manually operated scoreboard, or hop on a group tour of the park.
Peculiar Places
Museum of Bad Art
The Museum of Bad Art is (literally) the only place in the world where bad art is not only displayed but revered! It’s a hidden gem you need to uncover for yourself!
Boston Athenaeum (and the Skin Book)
Can we all just stop for a minute and say “ew?” The Boston Athenaeum houses a collection of 150,000 rare books. Tucked among them in a locked room is one with a morbid history. Its binding is made from the skin of one James Allen, a criminal who spent most of his life in and out of jail.
Edgar Allan Poe Square
Edgar Allan Poe Square is at the intersection of Boylston and Charles Streets. Poe was born in the area January 19, 1809 (although his home no longer exists.) The plaza boasts a statue of Poe with symbols from some of his best-known works.
Hood Milk Bottle
A forty-foot milk bottle isn’t really hidden, but it is a gem! Built in 1930 by Arthur Gagner to sell ice cream, the giant bottle stood empty for years until H.P. Hood and Sons, Inc. bought it and donated it to the Boston Children’s Museum in 1977. The dairy company is now noted on the side of the bottle that sells snacks and ice cream in the summer.
Great Molasses Flood
On January 15, 1919, a fifteen-foot wall of molasses flooded Commercial Street at 35 miles per hour. It wiped out everything in its path and took the lives of 21 bystanders. A plaque commemorating this horrific disaster can be found at the intersection of Commercial Street and Copps Hill Terrace.
Sensational Side Quests
Plimoth Plantation
Less than an hour’s drive from Boston is Plimoth Plantation. It’s an interactive 17th century experience centered on the Wampanoag people and the English settlers of Plymouth Colony. Students can chat with Pilgrims going about their daily lives or participate in Wampanoag life in the Native American village.
Salem
Famous for the 1692 Witch Trials, Salem offers immersive museums like the Salem Witch Museum and Witch Dungeon Museum. Students will also experience maritime adventures and literary landmarks like The House of the Seven Gables.
Six Flags New England
Add some excitement to your Boston student trip at Six Flags New England. Students love the heart pounding coasters, thrilling rides and amazing entertainment.
Special educational days turn the park into an interactive classroom with programs designed for physics, math and marketing.
Harvard University
Be sure to stop at the oldest and most prestigious universities in America. The Harvard University Visitor Center offers student-led walking tours of Harvard Yard that are open to the public and can be tailored for educational groups.
Additionally, Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences runs STEM-focused outreach programs specifically designed for middle and high school students, which can be a great complement to a campus tour.
