Student Group Travel To New York City: The Stars Are Aligned!
The new season on Broadway is well underway and we are excited to be talking about the newest shows playing the Great White Way. The Stars have definitely aligned to bring actors from stage and screen to Broadway. This year is already providing moving performances from stars like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan currently starring in Beckett’s Waiting for Godot & Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, Daniel Craig and his wife Rachel Weisz in Betrayal, and Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad in the Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet. This spring will bring us the return of America’s favorite Tony Awards host, Neil Patrick Harris, in the rock musical Hedwig & the Angry Inch, Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles and Alan Cummings as the Emcee in Cabaret, for which he has already won a Tony Award, and Denzel Washington and Diahann Carol in A Raisin in the Sun. Your group will see Stars in the theatres, on the street, and in their memories after a trip to New York City with Kaleidoscope Adventures.
Though the majority of shows will raise their curtain in the spring, there are several shows that have already opened on Broadway and are playing to sold out audiences. Other shows, such as the much anticipated New Musical If/ThenStarring Tony Award winners Idina Menzel and LaChanze and Disney’s Aladdin are playing out of town tryouts in Washington, D.C. and Toronto, respectively. If/Then, brought to you by the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning team of Next to Normal, tells the story of a 40 year old woman who moves back to New York to make a fresh start, a role that has been written specifically for Idina Menzel. The show recently opened at the National Theatre in D.C. and will move to Broadway in the spring. Disney’s Aladdin based on the 1992 Academy Award winning animated film of the same name, recently opened at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto. The stage version features newcomers, Adam Jacobs and Courtney Reed as Aladdin and Jasmine, and features Jonathan Freeman, the original voice of Jafar from the animated feature, reprising his role on stage.
Shows that have already opened on Broadway include Big Fish, starring two time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz and Tony nominee Kate Baldwin. Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the Tim Burton film, this show is directed and choreographed by 5-time Tony Award Winner Susan Stroman and is winning over audiences nightly. After a critically acclaimed production of Encore’s COTTON CLUB PARADE, After Midnight has already taken Broadway back to Harlem’s Golden Age in a new Musical that features the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars. American Idol’s Fantasia Barrino and Emmy Award nominee Dul Hill headline performances by 25 amazing dancers and singers, including a long list of Special Guest Star headliners. Other musicals currently playing include First Date starring Zachary Levi and Krysta Rodriguez, Beautiful The Carol King Musical featuring an amazing score of Carol King classics, A Night with Janis Joplin, and A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder starring Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays who plays eight roles in this musical comedy.
Recently the long running Mamma Mia! moved their disco balls and platform shoes to a new address to make way for Rocky the Musical. Based on the 1976 Academy Award winning film that cost just $1 million dollars and has earned $225 million world-wide and spawned 5 sequels, this show has been playing in Hamburg, Germany as Rocky das Musical since 2012 featuring a score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and a regulation size boxing ring that appears onstage during the final fight sequence. With the backing of the original Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone, who also originally wrote the Academy Award nominated script in just three days, Rocky the Musical will bring to Broadway an inspirational underdog story about believing in yourself. Another New Musical based on a popular film of the same name is Bridges of Madison County starring four-time Tony Award nominee Kelli O”Hara. The show features the brilliant creative team from the Tony Award winning revival of South Pacific and promises to take us deep into the heart of our country telling a moving story of the joyful discovery of love. And, if that wasn’t enough, two of the most celebrated musicals will return to Broadway in the year ahead. Les Miserables and Cabaret, who combined have received over 20 Tony Awards, will return this spring in brand new productions. Les Mis will feature new staging and reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. Roundabout Theatre Company will offer Cabaret as a limited run with Sam Mendes directing and Rob Marshall Co-Directing and Choreographing, returning to the roles they played in the 1998 production which won the Tony Award.
Of course, many great shows are still playing Broadway including this year’s Tony Award winner for Best New Musical, Kinky Boots, as well as past Tony Award Winning shows, Jersey Boys, Newsies, Once, Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, and The Lion King. Other highlights of the past Broadway season include Matilda the Musical, Motown the Musical and revivals of Pippin and Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which are all perfect choices for our many student groups. And, Wicked is celebrating its 10th Anniversary on Broadway this month having played over 4,155 performances making it the 11th longest running Broadway show.
